Dear Parents/ Caregivers

Your child has begun Term 4 enthusiastically, especially with the opportunity for them to perform in front of you at the 2017 Trash to Fashion show.

This is another very busy term and to help your child consolidate their learning I need you to ask them questions about what they have been doing at school and checking that they are doing some reading for at least 30 minutes each night and maths maintenance of times tables and basic facts, and revision of measurement, statistics, and geometry.

This week (week 3), all Rimu students will complete end of year Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs) for Maths, Reading, and Vocabulary. These tests will help teachers with some information to form an overall teacher judgement in assessing your child against the National Standard for Mathematics, Reading, and Writing.

As you may have heard with the change in government, the Labour led coalition will abolish National Standards and initiate a new system. Currently, we are still using National Standards to report on your child’s academic attainment.

"Animalia” is the ”Curiosity, Purpose, and Wonder” focus this term (formerly known as Inquiry). Your child has already taken part in the Rimu "hook in” activity which included them filling out a passenger arrival card to New Zealand so that they could experience going through Customs at an airport. They have started to do some research to provide them with an understanding of what is or is not allowed into New Zealand. Students who have been overseas with family are able to share their own knowledge of this process. Further research this term will develop their knowledge of how these concepts impact on their lives, other people, animals, and plants in New Zealand. This will provide them with many opportunities to develop their reading, research skills, and writing.

In Technology, students will be experimenting with the school’s new laser printer. This tool was purchased through the support of Ellerslie Rotary and will allow students to develop knowledge in making small items using the printer. Miss Barclay, along with the Rimu teachers, was very pleased with the efforts of all students in making the Trash to Fashion show a success.

Please make sure that your child is keeping up with their reading at home by reading for at least 30 minutes a night as this will allow them to access information across all of the learning areas. All students have access to E-Books, an initiative through Duffy Books in Homes, as well as the school library and the Auckland Library Bus.

This term we will cover writing genres that need more work as Intermediate students need to be able to write across the curriculum to meet the National Standard for writing. Please ensure that your child is learning their spelling words at home as this will support their ability to read and write well.

We have a busy sports schedule this term with Eastern Zone interschool fixtures still to come in Touch rugby (at Madill’s Farm in Kohimarama), and Athletics (at Lloyd Elsmore Reserve in Pakuranga). You are most welcome to attend these games. After-school touch rugby starts this Friday (3 November - week 3 at Hamlin Park, Mt Wellington).

The Rimu team will be doing education outside the classroom activities (EOTC) in week 7 and 8. This will mean that there will be a cost involved. We will be sending a letter home in the next week saying how much this will cost.

Reports will go home in week 8 and if needed you will be able to make an appointment with your child’s teacher to discuss any points in the report.

The Year 8 students will be having a graduation on Wednesday evening 13 December. This is to celebrate their time at Bailey Road School and to wish them all the very best as they move to college. Thursday the 14th of December is the last day of school with the Kowhai and Rimu Prizegiving being the final act of the year. We hope that you can make this special event.

If you have any issues, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.

Kind regards
