Dear Parents/ Caregivers

Your child has begun Term 3 enthusiastically and I am optimistic that they will continue to fully engage in their learning.

This is another very busy term and to accelerate your child’s learning I need you to support their learning at home by asking them questions about what they have been doing at school and checking that they are doing some reading for 30 minutes each night and maths maintenance.

Week two has student led parent-teacher conferences on Wednesday 2nd August and Thursday 3rd August from 3.00pm to 7.00pm. The principal has advised teachers that he wants ALL PARENTS to attend these conferences. Please make an appointment to see me by going online and registering your time at You will need to enter the code RF233. Meetings will be in your child’s classroom this year.

"Trash to Treasure” is the Inquiry focus this term. Your child has already done some research to provide them with an understanding of what some of these concepts are, besides bringing their own knowledge from home and the communities they belong to outside of school. Further research this term will develop their knowledge of how these concepts impact on their lives, people in New Zealand and from other countries around the World. This will provide them with many opportunities to develop their reading, research skills, and writing.

In Technology, students will be creating garments for Trash to Fashion, learning how to create imaginative, colourful items by upscaling clothing by adding recycled materials or starting from new. These outcomes will be inspired by the concept of Kiwiana - the iconic symbols of Aotearoa-New Zealand that identify personal and cultural identity, traditions, values and beliefs, celebrations, and diversity. Students will also explore various cultural patterns and designs. Can you please make sure that the $15 per term Technology fee is paid, as this allows for materials and other resources to be purchased to support student learning. The Trash to Fashion show will be held in week 2 of Term 4. You will need to get in quick when tickets are on sale as tickets are limited only for the one night production.

Please make sure that your child is keeping up with their reading at home by reading for at least 25 minutes a night as this will allow them to access information across all of the learning areas. All students have access to E-Books, an initiative through Duffy Books in Homes, as well as the school library and the Auckland Library Bus.

Writing is our school-wide focus again this year with Descriptive writing being the writing style that we are concentrating on in Term 3. However, Intermediate students need to be able to write across the curriculum to meet the National Standard for writing so teachers will be revisiting areas already taught. Please ensure that your child is learning their spelling words at home as this will support their ability to read and write well.

A big thank you to those parents who attended the Maths evening last term as the focus was on the learning of basic facts and times tables, things that still inhibit mathematics progress for our Year 7 and 8 students. The Maths strand for this term is Geometry and you can assist at home by getting your child to learn all of the basic shapes and what their attributes are ie. How many sides does a square have? How many angles does a square have? What type of angles (number of degrees-acute, obtuse, straight, reflex)? How many corners/vertices does it have? Times tables need to be learned fully to help with solving equations within problems and for converting measures, fractions, decimals and percentages.

We have a very busy sports schedule this term with Eastern Zone interschool fixtures in Netball (Tuesday 8 August at Auckland Netball Courts in week 3), Rugby League and Sevens rugby (week 3), and Basketball (week 7). You are most welcome to attend these games. After-school netball continues on Tuesday (week 2).

The school has its annual Fun Run fundraising. This year the PTA is running this event. Each family will receive at least one sponsorship form to collect sponsorship. All sponsorship forms and money will need to be returned to school within 2 weeks of the fun run. The fun run will be held on Friday 1st September around our cross-country course at school. Can you please get behind this initiative as the money raised is used to provide quality programmes within each team at Bailey Road School.

If you have any issues, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us, otherwise we hope to see all of you next Wednesday or Thursday for the student led conferences.

Kind regards
